Search engine optimization is a critical practice for any site owner or content manager. You’re short-changing yourself if you don’t incorporate SEO into your blog posts or web pages.

The purpose of SEO is to increase your business’s visibility on search engines. There’s no magic recipe for getting in Google’s top-10 search results, but search optimization gives your page a better chance at moving up in the rankings.

If you can’t afford paid advertising, SEO can be an affordable way to extend your brand’s exposure. Oftentimes, business owners can perform SEO tasks on their own time with little to no monetary investment, and that’s why it’s such an important practice for small businesses to master.

These helpful tools will give you the power to perform professional-level SEO tasks for no cost at all. Start taking advantage of them today and you’ll see the “SEO effect” will be noticeable in no time.

This list updates regularly with new resources, so be sure to save it in your favorites.

UberSuggest

If you’re a digital marketer, you need to be following Neil Patel. This guy is an absolute titan. He’s a must-follow on social media, YouTube, and LinkedIn, but his best gift to budget-conscious freelancers everywhere is undoubtedly his UberSuggest tool.

UberSuggest offers an amazing array of SEO features and it’s totally free. All you have to do is link a Google account to access full functionality. Patel is constantly adding new features to the platform too.

When I first started using it, it only offered basic keyword lookup and suggestions. Now, it’s feature lineup rivals professional-grade tools like Ahrefs and Moz SEO.

I have access to paid SEO tools at some of my current positions, and I still find myself turning to UberSuggest to research keywords and analyze websites. It even has a site audit tool and a rank tracker feature. It’s a fantastic tool on any level, and it’s a must-have for any up-and-coming SEO pro.

Yoast SEO Real-Time Content Analysis

I started working with Yoast early on in my writing career. It’s a very common WordPress plugin that offers live SEO content analysis.

Yoast analyzes your content’s body text, title, meta description, and more, so it gives you a complete picture of your content’s search profile. It also analyzes your text for readability, so it can help you improve your writing too.

Yoast is extremely common, but every client you work with won’t have it. If you still want to write with Yoast outside of WordPress, you can use the 100% free Yoast content analysis tool.

It works just like a WordPress text editor, and it even has a section for meta description and title. You can either write directly in the editor or copy your text in for analysis. Once you work out all the kinks that Yoast points out, all you have to do is copy and paste it back into your word processing editor.

When you’re not writing in WordPress or your client doesn’t have Yoast, this real-time text editor is a lifesaver. It will ensure that your content always follows the best SEO practices and has the strongest-possible search profile.

Google Trends

If you’re an editor or content manager, it’s your job to find topics that will bring in traffic and generate clicks. With over 3.5 billion search queries per day, Google is a major news source for millions of people.

You can gather a lot of information on what stories are getting the most intention by using Google’s Search Trends tool. Many sites rely on organic search to generate most of their traffic, so posting hot content is a great way to attract higher-volume searches.

The best thing about this tool is you can search trending terms by category. If you run a stock market site, for instance, you can search for popular terms relating to investing.

You’ll quickly see which types of stocks are getting the most searches. For example, you might see that searches for “best cannabis stocks” are surging over the past week. Then, you can schedule some blog posts to capitalize on the extra traffic.

You can also sort through results chronologically, so you can search for the hottest terms today, this week, this month, or this year.

Google offers an arsenal of excellent SEO tools, and you should explore them all. However, as a content manager and editor, this is one of my personal favorites. It saves me tons of time, and it takes the guesswork out of content scheduling.
